Specialty Surgery Program - Port-au-Prince

Project Medishare has formed strong partnerships with the following organizations and institutions in Miami and Haiti to provide operations to children suffering from hydrocephalus in Haiti: Miami Children's Hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Hopital Universitaire de la Paix, STEM Ministries, Healing Hands for Haiti, Haiti's Ministry of Health and Centre d'imagerie.

The goal of this program is to provide surgeries to people that need them in the most cost-effective and humane way possible. It is beneficial to perform the surgeries in Haiti for the following reasons:

  • It is much more cost-effective to bring a team of doctors to Haiti than to have a child travel to the United States to secure care when they do not have medical insurance and usually no possibility to pay for these services.

  • It can be difficult to secure a visa for a family to travel to the United States and arriving in a foreign country is shocking and difficult for rural families. It also can become a complex problem having people experience the US and then sending them back to a severely impoverished country, like Haiti.

  • Performing surgeries in the United States eliminates the possibility of capacity building exercises for Haitian surgeons that always assist with the procedures done in Haiti and are able to learn a tremendous amount from their American counterparts.
